Relapse - Let's start with a brief G.B.N. presentation for everyone who doesn't know your band yet.
GBN - Kiyonob, Hironori and I decided to start a grindnoisecore band in 1989. We named the band GORE BEYOND NECROPSY and started playing our own sick and filthy grindcore songs just like early CARCASS with Mamoru as vocalist. We had used a drum-machine since our original drummer had left in '92. At first, we'd enjoyed to play with it but after a while we'd got bored with it 'coz it sounded really weak. In sept. '96 finally Hayato joined G.B.N. as a human grinding drum-machine. We started as just another CARCASS clone shit but now we play our own analdrillingrindharshitcore!
The line up is: Mamoru (vocals), Kiyonob (guitar), Hironori (noise), Hayato (drums), Akinob (bass)
We'd released the following shit so far: Reh-demo '91, Promo Live Tape '91, "I Recommend You...Amputation!" Demo'92, "This Is An EP You Want" 7" '93, Live tape '94, Split EP with GUT '94, MERZBOW + G.B.N. collaboration EP "Rectal Grinder" '95, Split EP with SENSELESS APOCALYPSE '96, "Faecal Noise Holocaust" 7" EP '96, Split EP with DISGORGE '97, MERZBOW + G.B.N. collaboration LP/CD "Rectal Anarchy" '97.
Relapse - The "Faecal Noise Holocaust" EP is one of the most extreme releases I've ever checked out. Are you pleased with it? How has it sold? Anything you would like to change on it?
GBN - I'm very glad to hear you like it! Yeah, I like it, too!! I don't know exacly how many copies are sold, sorry! But I heard Honza of ICY ILLUSIONS Recs did more 300 copies as 2nd press, so 800 copies were pressed, I guess. The soundquality of guitars and drums are really cheap, so if we could make guitars and drums much lower, it would be far better!!
Relapse - When did you decide to mix electronic noise with goregrind? What are the grind and the noise bands that have mainly influenced G.B.N.?
GBN - In '91 Kiyonob had started making noise while playing the guitar by using lots of effects and peddals and later, Hironori followed to do it. After a while, Kiyonob got bored to make noise but Hironori wanted to only make noise. Now they do what they want. Well, we've got great influence from old NAPALM DEATH, old CARCASS, SORE THROAT, FEAR OF GOD, MERZBOW, HIJOKAIDAN, MASONNA, CACOFONIA, NEFARIOUS, GUT, REGURGITATE, ARSEDESTROYER, S.O.B., CONFUSION(first flexi), old AGATHOCLES, SPK, CONTROLLED BLEEDING, LUSTMORD and lots more. Also we are heavily influenced by HC, punk, rock'n'roll, raw+filthy death metal music.
Relapse - Is there any particular meaning under the band's name or you chose it just'coz it sounds sick?
GBN - Yeah, you're right! We use it means nothing but just sounds sick and shitty!! So, please, don't think G.B.N. as "brutal fuckin' grindin' death metal"!!
Relapse - You have recently released a CD in collaboration with MERZBOW through RELEASE recs. Could you tell me how and when is born your collaboration with Masami Akita? Will you release other stuff with him?
GBN - In september '94, we had played live with VIOLENT ONSEN GEISHA, At that time Masami of MERZBOW had played the drums for V.O. We said we really love MERZBOW and he had interest to do something with G.B.N., so MERZBOW + G.B.N. was born. We did some gigs and Mr. Iijima of MANGROVE label came to see our live show and planned to release the collaboration EP, so we did "Rectal Grinder" 7" in '95. Bill of RELEASE had also an interest in our collaboration stuff, we went to Masami's ZSF PRODUCT studio and recorded some basic trax for it in summer'96. The first song on CD (CD bonus track) is based on our live recorded trax at La Lama, Shibuya, Tokyo, late'95.
The line up of that live show was: Sinyo (GRUDGE) - vocals, Hironori - vocals, Bara (MERZBOW) - vocals Kosakai (INCAPACITANTS) - vocals, Masami - noise, Kiyonob - guitar, Akinob - bass. Mamoru couldn't take part in the project due to his job.
Relapse - The 18th track of "Faecal..." is titled "viva anarcho", I suppose you are an anarchist, or not? What is your idea of anarchy? What are the anarchists who have influenced yourself?
GBN -When I was a young boy, I had been into anarchistic thoughts by CRASS, CONFLICT etc...but getting older, I knew it's very and difficult to realize it and it's a fantasy to me. But I'm still in sympathy with anarchism. I think if all greedy bastards/ bullshit politicians/ fucked up systems are destroyed, our lives would be much better, so I made this song.
Relapse - How is life in Japan? I don't know so much about your country, can you make a short description of life in the rising sun country?
GBN - Totally fucked up!! It takes a lot of money to live here in japan. Everything is so expensive!!!! Shit!!
Relapse - How is possible that japan has a huge number of excellent grind/noise/HC bands? Maybe there's something in the air!! What are, in your opinion, the best new acts?
GBN - Yes, our brain are totally intoxicated by polluted dioxin air, so we can make good music! Ha Ha Ha....I think there are lots of good grind/HC/noise bands in all over the world. I don't know why you think such a shit! Well, my fave recent bands are GRUDGE (godz!!), D.I.E., NIKUDOREI (MEATSLAVE), IRF, T.R.U.T.H., 324, MORE NOISE FOR LIFE, MASSGENOCIDE and so on.
Relapse - Have you got any side project?
GBN -Hironori, Kiyonob and I do a side project harshitnoisecore band called REPULTURID MANGEL. I do drums and vocals for R.M. Before G.B.N. I played bass in a HC band called MORBID ORGANS MUTILATION. M.O.M. had released split 7" with AGATHOCLES, "war" live 7"EP and tons of demo tapes. M.O.M. was split up around in '93 but Shinji and I (both original members) plan to reform and record new songs now. Kiyonob and I also plan to do raw punk/garage punk/dirty rock'n'roll band under the influence of GG ALLIN, ANTISEEN, The RIP OFFS, The INFECTIONS, The SPACESHITS, LOLI & the CHONES, MISFITS, RAMONES etc...
Relapse - I know that some years ago you planned to release a full-lengh CD through a german label, but it has never seen the light. How did the shit gone?
GBN - Certainly, we had planned to do a full-lenght CD for M.M.I. Recs in '93-'94. We wanted make really raw, filthy and harsh grindnoisecore stuff but M.M.I.wanted high quality clean sounded one. So, we couldn't do it. It's a good decision for us coz we always wanna be much rawer, filthier, shittier and noiser ever than before! We do what we want and always will!!
Relapse - I read somewhere that gigs in kyoto are really crazy, is it true? Have you ever played there? What has been the best G.B.N. gig? Is it difficult to play your tracks live?
GBN -Yeah, we went to osaka/kyoto in summer '96 with GRUDGE. The gig was not a special one, I guess. But after the show, we went to a bar and I got drunk tooo much and...I can't write it down there! Sorry!!! Well, the most impressive one is the tour in melbourne, australia in late dec. '97 - early jan. '98. It was the first time and only shit for us to play outside japan. We did three times in melbourne with WARSORE, DISGORGE, DRUNKARD, STAND AGAINST, VISCERA, DECOMPOSING SERENITY and HAW. We stayed Paul (WARSORE guitarist)'s house for about 10 days and we really enjoyed a great vacation there. It was the best pleasure I'd ever had!! All bands were really raw and great, all people we met were very kind, nice and friendly!! Hello, all aussie filthy yobbongerd! I never forget all of you!! Well, we don't play lots of noisecore shits on "Faecal Noise Holocaust" EP, so it's not difficult for us as you expected.
Relapse - I suppose you are into gore/trash flix, what are your faves? Do you like the italian ones?
GBN - No, I'm not into it. My faves is "Pink Flamingos" by John Waters. Have you ever seen it??? It really kills!!! Divine & John Waters rules!!!
Relapse - What's the craziest thing you've ever done?
GBN - To do with G.B.N. with Mamoru, Hironori and Kyionob since '91 is! To play with Hayato is make us puke, piss, shit and insane, too!!
